Our Work

The UK Foundation is at the early stage of its work, with a growing number of telephone boxes already identified, adopted or being reviewed for protection and future community use.

Our immediate focus is to prevent these kiosks from being removed, neglected or lost, while we secure the funding and support needed to restore them properly and bring them back into meaningful use.

Protecting Telephone Boxes Before They Are Lost

Many traditional telephone boxes are no longer used for their original purpose and can be at risk of removal. Once removed, they are often unlikely to return to the communities they once served.

Our first step is to identify telephone boxes that may be suitable for adoption, restoration or community reuse. Where possible, we seek to secure these kiosks so they can be retained in place and protected for the future.

This early intervention is an important part of our work. Saving a telephone box from removal gives the local community an opportunity to decide how it could be used again.

Current Locations

We are currently reviewing and progressing a number of telephone box locations across the UK, including sites in Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Warrington and London.

These locations are at different stages. Some have already been adopted, while others are being reviewed for their condition, ownership position, heritage value, local need and potential future use.

The map below shows the rough locations of telephone boxes currently being reviewed or progressed by the Foundation.

Seeking Funding and Support

The Foundation is currently seeking funding, sponsorship and practical support to help move these projects forward.

Funding will help us with:

  • Telephone box cleaning and restoration
  • Replacement glazing, doors, panels and ironmongery where required
  • Repainting and heritage-sensitive repair works
  • Electrical works where power is required
  • Defibrillator cabinets and first aid equipment where suitable
  • Ongoing maintenance and insurance
  • Community information, signage and local engagement

Each telephone box will require a different level of work depending on its condition and proposed use.

Future Community Uses

Our aim is to give each telephone box a purpose that suits its location and benefits the surrounding community.

Potential uses include:

  • Public access defibrillator points
  • First aid and emergency information hubs
  • Community book exchanges
  • Local heritage displays
  • Community noticeboards
  • Visitor and local information points
  • Other locally supported community uses

Not every telephone box will be suitable for the same use. Some may be best suited to emergency equipment, while others may work better as heritage displays, book exchanges or community information points.

Working With Local Communities

We want each restored telephone box to reflect the needs of the community around it.

As our work develops, we aim to work with local residents, councils, businesses, community groups and sponsors to agree practical and sustainable uses for each kiosk.

Our role is to help protect the structure, support its restoration and make sure it continues to have a purpose for future generations.

What We Have Achieved So Far

Although the Foundation is still at an early stage, we have already started to make progress by:

  • Identifying telephone boxes at risk of being lost
  • Adopting a number of kiosks to help secure their future
  • Beginning discussions around future community uses
  • Reviewing locations for defibrillator and first aid potential
  • Seeking funding to support restoration and long-term maintenance
  • Raising awareness of the value of telephone boxes as community assets

This is the first step in a wider programme of work to protect and restore telephone boxes across the UK.

Help Us Bring These Boxes Back Into Use

We are currently seeking support from funders, sponsors, businesses, local authorities and community groups.

By supporting the Foundation, you can help save telephone boxes from removal, restore them with care, and give them a renewed purpose within the communities they serve.

Whether through funding, sponsorship, practical help or local knowledge, your support can help turn these familiar structures into valued community assets once again.
